The village of Ajanaku was known for its peaceful coexistence until a misunderstanding arose between two neighbouring families, the Adekunles and the Baloguns. For many years, both families had lived side by side, sharing wells, festivals, and even meals. Trouble started one planting season when a piece of farmland between their houses became a subject of dispute.
The Baloguns claimed the land belonged to their late grandfather, while the Adekunles insisted it was part of their inheritance. What began as a simple argument soon grew into a serious conflict. Harsh words were exchanged, threats were made, and the once-friendly greetings disappeared. The matter became so tense that the youths of both families began to prepare for a physical confrontation.
Mr. Sola Adekunle, the head of his family, was a hot-tempered man. He believed that strength and intimidation would settle the issue quickly. One evening, he gathered his sons and instructed them to confront the Baloguns forcefully. Unknown to him, Mama Tinu Balogun, a respected elderly woman known for her wisdom, had heard about the planned confrontation.
The next morning, before any fight could break out, Mama Tinu paid a visit to Mr. Sola. Instead of shouting or accusing him, she greeted him politely and reminded him of the long-standing friendship between their families. She spoke calmly about how violence would only bring pain, police trouble, and lasting hatred. She reminded him of how their children once played together and how both families had supported each other during difficult times.
At first, Mr. Sola was unmoved. He insisted that he would not allow his family to be cheated. Mama Tinu then suggested involving the village elders to investigate the land issue properly. She explained that truth and peace were more valuable than land and that patience would protect their dignity.
Her words gradually softened Mr. Sola’s heart. He realised that a violent clash could destroy the reputation he had built over the years. Later that day, both families agreed to meet with the village elders. After careful examination and listening to witnesses, the elders discovered that the land actually belonged to the community and had been mistakenly used by both families over time.
The elders advised that the land should be shared peacefully or used for a community project. Both families accepted the decision and apologised to each other. Peace returned to Ajanaku, and the families resumed their friendly relationship.
As Mr. Sola reflected on the events, he appreciated Mama Tinu’s calm approach. He admitted that her wise words had prevented a violent disaster. From that day onward, he became an advocate of peaceful dialogue in the village, always reminding others that Persuasion is better than force.
