Power shortage has sadly become the norm in our school and surrounding areas, plunging us into darkness for most of the day and crippling daily activities. In 2025 alone, Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed multiple times, with recent incidents in September dropping generation from nearly 3,000MW to just 1.5MW in hours, leaving millions in blackout. Residents in many regions, including ours, endure only 5-6 hours of electricity daily, while power plants operate below 40% capacity amid stranded generation losses exceeding N2.3 trillion. This crisis hits students hardest, forcing us to study under kerosene lamps that strain our eyes and fill rooms with fumes, or charge phones at exorbitant rates from neighbors with generators.
The impacts ripple through every aspect of life, turning minor inconveniences into major hardships. Classrooms swelter without fans during hot afternoons, distracting us from lessons and causing heat exhaustion among younger pupils. Labs sit idle as equipment like microscopes and computers gather dust, widening the gap between theory and practice in subjects like physics and chemistry. Exam preparations suffer too; last term, many missed deadlines for online assignments due to outages, and night reading became a luxury. Businesses nearby close early, families cook with firewood that chokes the air, and hospitals report spoiled vaccines from fridge failures. Economically, genCos lost billions to unused power, stunting growth while 90 million Nigerians live without reliable supply, more than any other country. In our school, morale dips as teachers improvise lessons without projectors, and extracurriculars like computer club fizzle out.
Several factors fuel this endless cycle of blackouts, demanding urgent scrutiny. Aging infrastructure, with the grid suffering nearly 140 failures in a decade, buckles under rising demand from population growth. Gas shortages cripple thermal plants, vandalism targets transmission lines, and poor maintenance by distribution companies leads to frequent tripping. Corruption siphons funds meant for upgrades, while rural areas like parts near our school get overlooked despite 20,000 communities still in darkness. First quarter 2025 saw average generation at 4,770MW despite 5,366MW capacity, showing systemic inefficiencies.
Thankfully, practical solutions exist to brighten our future if acted upon decisively. Schools and communities should embrace solar panels; mini-grids powering hostels and labs could provide 24/7 supply, as seen in booming solar markets addressing outages. Government must prioritize grid rehabilitation, enforcing NERC penalties on underperforming Discos and fast-tracking 12,000MW from new deals. Incentives for household generators or inverters, coupled with public campaigns on energy conservation like LED bulbs and off-peak usage, would ease strain. Partnering with private firms for smart meters to curb theft, and investing in renewables like wind farms, offers long-term relief. Our school PTA could lead by installing solar boreholes, setting an example.
This power crisis dims Nigeria’s potential, but collective action promises light. Students urge authorities: fix the grid, fund renewables, and empower locals. A powered tomorrow starts with us demanding change today.
